DIY-Style Guide: PRF vs PRP for Skin & Hair — And Exactly How I Do My Process
If you’re into glow-boosting, collagen-stimulating, under-eye-brightening magic, you’ve probably heard of PRP and PRF. I use both regularly for skin and hair, and today I’m breaking down the difference between them — plus a realistic DIY-style look at the exact process I follow when I’m doing my own treatments at home.
(Obviously, this is for educational purposes only. I’m a nurse, but you should always consult a professional before poking your own face.)
PRP vs PRF: What’s the Difference?
Think of them like two versions of your body’s growth-factor serum.
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
Spun at higher speeds
Produces a thin golden plasma full of platelets
Releases growth factors fast
Best for: microneedling, acne scars, texture, general skin rejuvenation
PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin)
Spun at lower speeds with NO anticoagulant
Creates a thicker, gel-like fibrin matrix
Releases growth factors slowly for 7–10 days
Best for: under-eye hollows, hair restoration, fine lines, areas needing volume + long-lasting regeneration
PRP = quick burst
PRF = slow drip
I use both depending on what I’m targeting.
My Actual DIY Process (Face + Under Eyes + Scalp)
This is the exact way I do my treatments, step-by-step. Again — educational purposes only, babes.
STEP 1: Prep Your Space
I set everything up clean, organized, and ready before drawing any blood.
My setup includes:
Alcohol wipes
10 mL Vacutainer tubes (PRP)
10 mL PRF tubes (no anticoagulant)

The PRF tubes I use. Product LINK on Amazon. I might earn a commission.
The Butterfly Needle set I use. LINK on Amazon, I sometimes earn a commission. Syringes + blunt cannulas

25g 35mm Blunt Cannula. LINK to the ones I use. I might earn commission. My centrifuge

ONiLAB Benchtop Centrifuge. LINK to product on Amazon, I might earn a small commission. Gauze
Numbing cream
Everything laid out = smooth process.
STEP 2: Draw the Blood
I usually draw two tubes:
1 PRP tube for microneedling
1 PRF tube for under-eyes or scalp
If I’m doing hair only, I might do just PRF.
STEP 3: Spin the Tubes
This is the part people mess up, so here’s exactly what I do:
PRP Spin
High speed
Longer spin
Goal: separate the plasma into a clear, golden fluid
PRF Spin
Low speed
Shorter spin
No anticoagulant
Goal: keep living cells, fibrin, and platelets intact so it forms a soft, gel-like serum

💛 PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) — LOW SPIN
PRF MUST be low g-force since it uses no anticoagulant.
Set to:
RCF (g-force): 200–300 gMost accurate
Time: 5–8 minutes
Mode: P2 (slow stop)
If you want it in RPM instead of RCF, this equals:
RPM: ~1300–1500 RPM
This gives you the thick, cloudy, fibrin-rich layer that forms your “gel.”
✨ PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) — HIGH SPIN
PRP uses anticoagulant tubes, so fast spin is fine.
Set to:
RCF: 1200–1500 g
Time: 10–12 minutes
Mode: P1 (fast stop)
In RPM, this equals:
RPM: ~3200–3500 RPM
This produces the clear golden plasma layer you draw off the top.
⭐ Recommended Programs to Save on Your Machine
P1 = PRP
3500 RPM
10:00 minutes
Fast stop (quick braking)
P2 = PRF
1400 RPM
5:00–8:00 minutes
Slow stop (gentle braking)
This prevents the PRF clot from ripping or separating.
When the timer goes off, PRP looks watery, PRF looks cloudy/thicker.

STEP 4: Collect the Good Stuff
I use a sterile syringe to pull off the layers:
For PRP: I withdraw the top golden layer
For PRF: I gather the soft, buffy fibrin layer
PRF starts thickening fast — like within minutes — so I always inject that first.
STEP 5: Treat the Area
UNDER EYES (My Favorite Use for PRF)
I use a 25g cannula and go through a small entry point near the outer eye.
I slowly lay tiny threads of PRF in the tear trough and orbital hollow.
No filler look – it’s subtle, hydrated, lifted.
I like that PRF keeps releasing growth factors for days and doesn’t migrate like HA fillers.
FACE (PRP for Glow)
If I’m microneedling:
Apply a thin layer of PRP as slip
Microneedle it into the skin
Add another light coat afterward
This gives the “glass-skin next day” effect.

SCALP (PRF + PRP for Hair)
When I’m doing scalp mesotherapy:
I usually use PRF if I want long-lasting stimulation
Or PRP when I’m stacking with exosomes or copper peptides
I inject tiny micro-boluses across the thinning zones (especially my temples) in a grid pattern.
STEP 6: Aftercare
My personal rules:
No makeup for 24 hours
No heavy sweating
No retinoids or acids for 3–5 days
Lots of hydration and gentle products
Under-eyes from PRF look puffy at first — totally normal. It smooths out beautifully over 48 hours.
Which One Should You Use?
Here’s the quick cheat sheet based on what I actually see in my own results:
PRF
Under eyes
Hairline/temples
Fine lines needing “cushion”
Long-term regeneration
PRP
Overall glow
Texture
Microneedling sessions
Acne scarring
I alternate the two depending on what I’m treating that night.
Final Thoughts
PRP and PRF are literally your own bio-boosters — powerful, natural, and customizable. Whether you want brighter under-eyes, thicker hair regrowth, or smoother skin, both options deliver insane results when used right.
This is the exact process I follow in my own DIY aesthetic routine, and it’s one of my favorite ways to keep my skin bright, my hairline full, and everything looking fresh. Check out my DIY Microneedling guide and if you're comfortable with syringes, look at my guides on peptides.
